Technology and the Workplace Webinar Series Outline

Here is a brief description of the webinars included in this series.

Computer Hardware
This webinar starts with computer basics, describing the functions of the computer processor (CPU), memory (RAM), and hard drive. Mike walks through the behind the scenes of the system in plain English. He talks about troubleshooting, why rebooting fixes many problems, Windows task manager, what to look for in hardware specs when purchasing a computer and what they mean, operating systems, and price comparison with regard to features and benchmark testing. There is also information regarding video and sound cards, DVDs, and laptops vs. desktop computers. If you can understand how a kitchen works, you can understand how a computer works.

Encryption
This webinar explains what is encryption, why it is important, safeguarding patient information, possible security breaches with regard to the hard drive, storing data, and transferring data. Mike also explains algorithms and the differences between encryption keys, secret key encryption, public key encryption, session keys, and Internet security using trusted third parties.

Firewalls, Anti-Virus, Spyware, and Encryption, Oh My!
This webinar explains how an MT can employ a variety of security techniques to keep patient data and their computer safe. Mike explains hardware and software firewalls and how they work, anti-virus software, malware, viruses including Trojan horse viruses and worms. He reviews general computer security tips and explains spyware, cookies, encryption basics, and other computer vulnerabilities. Learn how the different security components work together to keep your data safe and keep your computer working well.

Virtual Machines
This webinar will teach you how to create a virtual machine on your computer. An example of when you would need a virtual machine is when your employer requires an operating system that is incompatible with the operating system you have on your computer (you have Windows 7, 64-bit, and your employer requires Windows XP, or you have a Mac and your employer requires Windows). Mike explains how to use storage media to create a virtual machine and the advantages and using a virtual machine as an emergency backup. Mike walks through setting up a virtual machine step by step in this webinar.

Networking–Part 1 and 2
The first webinar (Part 1) is an introduction to networking, what is a network, what you can do with a network, and the hardware involved. Part 2 discusses network software to include remote control software, internet browsers, email, and webinar/meeting software, troubleshooting, and detail on computer security. Also included, a live look at router configuration.
