The purpose of the medical transcription program offered by M-TEC® is to train qualified entry-level medical transcriptionists. The descriptions below summarize the course content and objectives. Students will be expected to demonstrate knowledge, comprehension, application, and analysis of the topics covered in each program.
Your coursework will include the following:
Medical Transcription Practice
Students will be required to apply the skills they learned in all other content areas. Critical thinking skills, editing, technology and proofreading are essential elements. Transcription practice will include only actual healthcare-provider originated dictation and cover the following areas:
• Beginning Medical Transcription Practicum
• Intermediate Medical Transcription Practicum
• Advanced Medical Transcription Practicum
• Foreign Accents
• Pre-Employment Skill Level Testing

• Professional Development
English Language/Medical Style and Grammar
Students will learn to apply rules of proper grammar, punctuation, and medical style, along with correct spelling and logical sentence structure based on the AHDI Book of Style for Medical Transcription. Medical Knowledge
Training includes advanced medical terminology with pronunciation, anatomy and physiology, clinical medicine, laboratory tests, pharmacology, surgery, imaging techniques, and pathology. These competencies are taught by using M-TEC®’s college-level references and workbooks. These core competencies are applied throughout the curriculum and taught by body systems.
Technology
Students will be required to develop enhanced computer skills and transcription equipment proficiency with emphasis on beginning and advanced computer technology, application of dictation/transcription platforms with a work simulation lab, ergonomics, confidentiality and security-related computer software applications, electronic referencing/research, file transfers and advanced MT-related technology training. Students will be taught the trends and developments in medical transcription technology and given instruction on how to apply those techniques. These competencies are taught in the Medical Transcription Technology course offered by M-TEC®, which includes text and online class instruction by Mike DeTuri, an experienced medical transcriptionist, transcription editor, computer programmer and technology instructor for many years. The technology courses taught are then applied in Medicolegal Aspects of the Healthcare Record, Beginning Medical Transcription, Intermediate Medical Transcription, Advanced Medical Transcription, and throughout the training program.
Medicolegal Aspects of the Healthcare Record
Students will learn to understand the format, content, purpose, and legal aspects of healthcare records. Students will learn general knowledge of standards and regulations for healthcare documents, including HIPAA and risk management.
